Teaching English in Greece requirements

1. Have (or get!) a bachelor’s degree

Teaching jobs in Greece require a bachelor’s degree. The good news? It doesn’t really matter what you major in! Schools in Greece mostly want to know that you are educated and that you will add to the overall academic life at their school.

That being said, it certainly doesn’t hurt to major in English or teaching. The dedication and experience looks great on resumes. Either way, as long as you have a bachelor’s degree, you’re good to go!

2. Be TEFL certified

To teach in Greece, you need to have a TEFL certification. There are tons of ways to get certified, but the best way by far is to take an in-person class in Greece. Not only will this help you network, but it’ll also prepare you culturally to live and teach in Greece.

However, an in-person class in Greece isn’t your only option. When it comes to how to teach English in Greece, there are tons of online courses that you can complete from the comfort of your living room (and in comfy pajamas!).

3. Go to Greece to interview! (And be able to legally work there)

With those two requirements, you’re ready to head to Greece and look at job prospects! Most English schools in Greece hire locally, meaning you have to be physically in Greece to apply and interview. Here’s where it gets a little tricky.

You can get a work visa to teach English in Greece, but only if you already have a job contract and school to sponsor your visa. So you can’t interview until you’re in Greece, but you can’t legally work there until after you interview.

The best plan to circumvent this? Go to Greece on a tourist visa, which lasts for 90 days. That’s enough time to snag a great job—or even certify in country first!

While being able to legally work in Greece is totally doable, it’s worth noting that some companies prefer hiring EU citizens; it’s less hoops to jump through with visas.

4. Really love Greece and want to work there

Because of the visa situation, Greece isn’t the easiest location to secure an English teaching job. Make sure you really love Greece and are committed to working and living there.

Think of touring the Acropolis ruins, climbing Mount Olympus, and taking the perfect Instagram photo with the white domed houses of Santorini.
