Maui Brewing Co. in Lahaina was forced to close after a cockroach and rodent infestation was discovered during a complaint and routine inspection on Monday, the state Department of Health said Tuesday.

The Maui Food Safety Branch issued a red “closed” placard on Monday to the restaurant, which must remain closed until all violations are resolved and the Health Department allows it to reopen.

During the inspection, the department found “abundant evidence” of a rodent and roach infestation, according to a department news release. Rodent droppings and live cockroach activity were observed throughout the establishment, including on food items like pizza dough, in refrigeration units where food is stored and on surfaces where food is prepared. Live cockroach activity included a mixture of adult, juvenile and unhatched egg cases, indicating an active population, the department said. Two dead rodents were also observed in rodent traps within the downstairs food storage room during the inspection.

The restaurant was also cited for holes and openings where pests can enter; a buildup of grease and food debris, which attracts pests; an accumulation of clutter that can harbor pests; and a lack of soap and paper towels at the kitchen hand-washing sink.

Before it can reopen, Maui Brewing Co. is required to:

• Develop and conduct an aggressive pest control treatment and monitoring plan by a professional pest control company to eradicate the current pest infestation.

• Deep clean the facility to remove all conditions that harbor pests, such as the grease buildup and food debris and clutter within upstairs storage rooms.

• Seal all openings within the walls, ceiling and floors to prevent pest entry.

A follow-up inspection is scheduled for today.

Maui Brewing Co. is owned and operated by Amakua Holdings Inc. and located at 4405 Honoapiilani Highway No. 217.
